ENGLISH
The Palacio de Congresos in Granada was the venue chosen to host the jornadas organised by GRETA, the Andalucian English Teachers Association, under the banner of ‘Just think before you do it’. And a jolly interesting bash it was too. Talks were given by some of the Names from the TEFL world (Hancock, Seligson, Rinvolucri, Thornbury, Underhill, Walker – in alphabetical order, gents – to name but a few), as well as by local figures from GRETA, IH Córdoba, Universities of Huelva, Córdoba, Granada.........Tokyo! The opening plenary was given by Julianne House, whilst the formidable Mario Rinvolucri closed the event.
I must admit, I find these ‘do’s exhausting, what with workshops, talks, publishers, and social events, and almost too much to assimilate in three days, but either I was lucky in my choices of talk, or the standard was generally very high. Extra points go to Fernando Rubio of Huelva University and Mark Hancock (see Guest Writer) for their sessions, which apart from being interesting, easily-digestible and original, were also extremely relevant. Rather than vague promises of, say, wacky ideas for teaching phrasal verbs (I don’t think there was a talk on that; if there was, I apologise), the focus of these two workshops was the use of relaxation techniques in the classroom (I don’t want to give too much away, as I hope Mr. Rubio will be visiting our Guest page in the near future), and attention management, respectively.
Any ‘weak points’? Well, I heard a lot of comments regarding attendance being lower than usual, but the dates are probably to blame for that, as September is perhaps not the best month, especially for those in mainstream education. My own personal gripe is aimed at some of the publishers who seemed to pack up their pitches early on the Saturday morning, leaving me two short of a full house. Hang on in there ‘til the bitter end, chaps!
So, all in all a good do, well worth the airfare. See you next year, folks.......I’ll be back.

El Palacio de Congresos de Granada fue el sitio elegido para celebrar las jornadas de GRETA, La Asociación de Profesores de Inglés de Andalucía, bajo el lema de ‘Just think before you do it’. Unas jornadas muy interesantes, a decir verdad. Entre los ponentes se encontraban algunos de los Nombres del mundo de TEFL (Hancock, Seligson, Rinvolucri, Thornbury, Underhill, Walker – por orden alfabético, señores – para nombrar a unos cuantos), además de algunas caras conocidas de la zona, de GRETA, IH Córdoba, las universidades de Huelva, Córdoba, Granada.........¡Tokio! Como inauguración, hubo una sesión plenaria dada por Julianne House, mientras que la ponencia final fue asunto del extraordinario Mario Rinvolucri.
Debo admitir que suelo acabar agotada y bastante agobiada cuando asisto a congresos de este tipo, entre los ‘workshops’, las ponencias, las casas editoriales, los compromisos sociales, y casi demasiada información para mi pobre cabeza, sin embargo, o tuve mucha suerte a la hora de elegir las charlas, o el nivel general era muy alto. Y ‘sobresalientes’ para Fernando Rubio, de la Universidad de Huelva, y Mark Hancock (ver Invitado) por sus charlas, las cuales aparte de interesantes, amenas y originales, eran también muy relevantes. En lugar de ofrecer actividades ‘súper-divertidas’ para enseñar, digamos, ‘phrasal verbs’ (creo que no hubo ninguna ponencia sobre este tema; si me equivoco, pido perdón), el enfoque de estos dos ‘workshops’ era el uso de las técnicas de relajación en el aula (no voy a dar muchas pistas ya que espero que el señor Rubio nos visite en la sección Invitado próximamente), y ‘attention management’, respectivamente.
¿Puntos débiles? Bueno, se comentó bastante que había menos participación que en otros años, pero imagino que esto se debía a las fechas, dado que septiembre no es muy buen mes para nuestra profesión, sobre todo para los profesores de primaria y secundaria. Mi queja personal va dirigida a algunas de las editoriales que desmontaron sus chiringuitos el sábado tempranito, de forma que me faltaron dos para conseguir un ‘full’. Que tomen nota, señores.
En resumen, sí muy positivo, valió la pena hacer el viaje. Hasta el año que viene, ................ ¡volveré!

Paul Seligson on Pairwork
Very stimulating presentation which looked at how pairwork helps to keep the student involved in the learning experience.
We’re all familiar with the partner A and B type of exercises, but do we
always make it clear what B’s task is while A is quite happily wittering
away? He too needs a clear role: he can for example , prompt, write down mistakes, or hit his partner (gently, of course).
Some key points to ensure the success of pairwork activities are- making sure that STUDENTS MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT (They should be looking at each other and not at a book) and that they EXCHANGE NEW AND INTERESTING INFORMATION ( not asking questions to which they already know the answers)
Mario Rinvolucri- VOICE
Fascinating insight into how we react to vocal input.. How different it
makes us feel , for example if we hear the voice from nearby or far away,
from above or below. Then of course, the question of register and pitch. What sort of voice could the teacher adopt to keep the student attentive.
Paul Seligson - CREATURES OF HABIT
We like to think of ourselves as being flexible, but in this presentation,
Paul Seligson brought to our attention , just to what extent we are,
indeed, creatures of habit. After reading out a questionnaire on classroom management, it was remarkable how often the response was either “always” or “never”.
Seligson looked at how new teachers pick up techniques which rapidly become rituals and the dangers of the principles behind these rituals becoming left behind.
David Levey - RAP, RHYME & RHYTHM
Raps are useful exercises to practice stress, prominence and weak forms, although it can be tricky to use them effectively. According to Levey the best way of dealing with this is through imitation rather than through explanation.
A fun packed session which had people coming up with their own raps. Other ideas included phonetic jokes and riddles, linking sounds, poems, chants and limericks

Luke Prodromou is a teacher with the British Council in Greece. He has trained teachers in several European countries and Latin America. He has written FCE Star and Rising Star (Macmillan-Heinemann), Mixed Ability Classes (Prentice-Hall) and FCE Grammar and Vocabulary (Longman). He is a founder member of the Bits and Pieces ELT Theatre Group. He is currently engaged in PhD research into corpora, culture and pedagogy at the University of Nottingham.

Check out 'Moulin Rouge'.- it's wild and wacky, or at least surreal and pure
camp! The plot is 'not much cop' but, as they say at the end of the film,
the story is not what it's all about. The colours, the numbers, the
choreography, the whole semi-slapstick air of the thing....bet you haven't
been to anything like it for a while. All the songs are in English (and
you'll get a surprise when you hear what they were singing in Paris in 1900)
and a lot of the dialogue, I suspect, is lifted from song lyrics, though I'd
need to see it in V.O. to be sure (spot 'Love is like oxygen'). Anyone else
remember Ewan McGregor in 'Lipstick on your collar'...........?
Hay que
ver 'Moulin Rouge' - largometraje descabellado y divertido, o al
menos surreal y 'camp' atope (si no 'entiendes' la palabra, tendrás que ir a
ver la película...). El argumento no es gran cosa, pero, como dice el mismo
protagonista, el argumento es lo de menos. Los colores, los números
musicales, el ambiente de 'farándula'...apuesto que no habrás visto nada
parecido en mucho tiempo. Todas las canciones están en inglés ( y prepárate
para una sorpresa cuando descubras lo que cantaban en el París del año 1900)
y gran parte del diálogo también procede de la letra de canciones (a veces
hay que recurrir a la traducción al inglés para apreciar al 100% el guión y
los guiños musicales ). Una vuelta al género para un excelente Ewan
McGregor, que hizo sus pinitos en una serie tipo Allie McBeal años '40-'50
llamada 'Lipstick on your collar'.

These tend to be in Puerto de la Cruz. There is an International Christian Centre, an All Saints Anglican Church and a Christian Fellowship.
If you’re into walking or exploring you can get military maps of the whole island with a scale of 1:25,000. These are very detailed, and show contour lines and small roads and paths. These can be obtained from the Dept. of Cartography in the Military Building at the bottom of Rambla Pulido, opposite Plaza Weyler in Santa Cruz. They only cost about 300 ptas. They actually stock maps of the whole of the Canaries and indeed, the whole of Spain.
Subsidised by the Cabildo, you can take a four day course for as little as 9,000 ptas. to learn sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing. kite-surfing, or kayaking. Diving costs a little more. Phone 922 59 75 25 or 922 59 72 58

Peninsula
Providing you stay for at least one weekend and not more than 14 days, Iberia are offering return flights to Madrid for 30,000 ptas., which reduces to 20,000 ptas. for residents. Flights must be bookes at least two days prior to date of travel. See note about residency under Bureaucracy.
Fares to other cities in the peninsula are slightly higher. The services to Madrid and Barcelona are daily, whereas Alicante for example is twice a week.
U.K.
Single tickets cost an average of about 17,000 ptas. to various U.K. destinations. The return flight alone can cost anywhere between 25,000 ptas. and 35,000 ptas, so it may be worth considering just buying the single here, and the return in the U.K.
Germany
Condor and UTA charters to Frankfurt and other destinations are around 22,000 ptas one way and 40,000 return.(hin und zuruck)
France
It may be worthwhile checking out some of the travel agents in the South of the island, as there doesn’t seem to be much available in the way of charters in Santa Cruz.

Located just off La Concepción this long established and inexpensive
arepera looks more like a betting office from the outside with its huge blackboard displaying the goodies on offer. You can choose from a vast selection of tapas. Apart from arepas there is a huge range of bocadillos (averaging about 300 ptas.) and tortillas with all sorts of fillings. Specialities include Huevos a la Flamenca, Champiñones al Ajillo, Mejillones (Mussels) en Escabeche and Chocos en Salsa.
The place is adorned with photographs both present and past, and maps. Open Mondays-Saturdays 11.30am-11.00pm
Muy cerca de La Concepción, esta arepera lleva muchos años vendiendo sus manjares y no es nada cara. Desde fuera, se parece a la típica tienda/local británica de apuestas, con su pizarra enorme a modo de carta. La selección de arepas es más que amplia, y la lista incluye también los bocadillos tradicionales (precios rondan las 300 pesetas) además de un buen surtido de tortillas. Flashpoint, El Médano, Tfe.
Fancy a coffee and a slice of German cake less than two meters from the beach? Watch the wind-surfers fight for wave-space, or the sunset over the Atlantic, beer in hand, salad on the way? Try the Flashpoint at the far right-hand end of the boardwalk in El Médano. Food is simple but good, prices are very reasonable, and you can practise pretty much any language with the regulars. Open more or less all day, any day, with tables inside and out.
¿Te apetece tomar un café con un trozo de tarta alemana a menos de dos metros de la playa? ¿Observar a los windsurfistas compitiendo por las olas, o contemplar el puesto de sol sobre el Atlántico, con una cervecita bien fría en la mano, y una ensalada en camino? Prueba el Flashpoint, al extremo derecho del paseo marítimo del Médano. La comida es sencilla y sabrosa, los precios son muy razonables, y puedes practicar casi cualquier idioma con los habituales de este bar. Abierto casi todo el día, con mesas dentro y fuera.
En un domingo cualquiera puedes visitar la zona de Agua García y seguro que te apetecería degustar un buen pollo asado, chuleta o bistec a la brasa. Es el momento, entonces, de parar en el Restaurante El Parque. Dispone de una gran variedad de platos que podrás acompañar con un buen vino del país, y si la carne no es tu fuerte podrás elegir entre pulpo, chocos, ensaladas, etc…Precios razonables y ambiente agradable. One fine Sunday, you may fancy a drive around the Agua García area of Tenerife, and you may just be tempted to stop off for a good piece of roast chicken, chops, or chargrilled steak. That’s when I recommend you try the Restaurante El Parque. The menu offers a wide range of dishes, washed down with a good local wine, and if you’re not really a meat-eater, you can choose from the likes of octopus, cuttlefish, salads and so on. The prices are very reasonable and the atmosphere is pleasant.

Welcoming possible visitors from this part of the country, we have decided to extend our “gourmets’ corner” to cover the southern-most provinces of The Peninsula. So, here we go:
Mesón Papabellotas,.
Excellent eating in this historic town. The presentation and service are immaculate, the choice is varied ranging from tapas and ‘tablas’ to seafood brochettes and steak ‘a la brasa’. Price-wise, it is very reasonable, though not cheap and portions are generous: three courses, one glass of wine, water and coffee for a little over 3,000pts per head (erm, 18 euros?) Watch out for the air-conditioning, though.................
Toda una experiencia gastronómica en este pueblo histórico. La presentación y el servicio son inmejorables, las especialidades son variadas, desde las tapas y tablas hasta brochetas de rape o solomillo a la brasa. Los precios son razonables, lo cual no quiere decir baratos, y las raciones son buenas: tres platos (inc. postre), una copa de vino, agua y café por alrededor de 3.000pts (pueeeeess 18 euros) por persona. Sin embargo, ojo con el aire acondicionado...........................¡!

"El Churrasco", al lado de la Universidad (Filosofía y Letras), Córdoba.
Un poco caro – aunque no excesivamente ya que su calidad lo exige así. Sale
entre 5.000 y 6.000 pts por persona para comer bien sin hincharse. Mis platos
favoritos son:
-rabo de toro (como su nombre indica, la carne que cubre los huesos del rabo,
una carne buenísima, muy tierna y que se suelta bien, uno de los platos
cordobeses por antonomasia).
-churrasco (solomillo de carne a la brasa, materia prima y calidad insuperable y
una de las especialidades del restaurante).
-chuletitas de buey (chuletas de carne de buey que se terminan de hacer sobre un
plato refractario, deliciosas).
-besugo (excelente materia prima, hecho en su punto).
Entre los entrantes destacan las patatas a lo pobre, las setas con jamón, las
berenjenas con miel y, por supuesto, lo más típico de la cocina de Córdoba: el
flamenquín (rollo de carne con jamón y empanado); y el salmorejo (versión más
densa y sabrosa del gazpacho).
Destaca también su selección de vinos (el rioja de la casa es muy bueno) y,
además, la utilización de aceite de oliva de Baena (uno de los mejores del
mundo), del que se puede disfrutar pidiéndolo con unas rebanaditas de pan
tostado.
A little expensive, though the quality more than justifies the price. Around 5,000 to 6,000 pesetas per head to eat well, without over-doing it. My favourites are:
-bull’s tail (as the name suggests, this is the meat covering the bones in the
tail, a top quality meat, wonderfully tender, and one of the most typical dishes
of Córdoba.).
-churrasco (the highest quality steak, and one of the restaurant’s
specialities).
–beef chops (a smaller version of the defunct t-bone steak, theis dish is
absolutely delicious).
–sea bream (this popular fish is done to perfection).
Amongst the hors-d’oeuvres, we could recommend the ‘poorman’s potatoes’, the
chestnut mushrooms with cured ham, the aubergines cooked in honey and, of
course, the most typical dishes in Cordobés cuisine: the ‘flamenquín’ (meat
wrapped in ham, then coated in bread-crumbs); and
salmorejo (a tastier, more satisfying version of gazpacho).
The wine list is also worth a mention, (the house Rioja is extremely good) and
the olive oil used in this restaurant is from Baena, one of the best oil
producing towns in the world, and it can be best appreciated by ordering some
pieces of toasted bread on the side.

When travelling from the Canaries to the peninsula, residents of the Canaries are entitled to a 33% discount. All you need to do to qualify is “empadronarte” of the area where you live. You will need to go to your local “ayuntamiento” (town hall) with proof of your address, such as water or electricity bills. If you’re sharing a house, one of your roommates needs only to give you a letter of authority together with the bills in his name.
You will then be given a document -its called “hoja de inscripcion” (there is a nominal charge). Whenever you want to travel you simply go along to your ayuntamiento, and on paying a fee of about 300 ptas, you will receive a travel document- “certificado de viajes” which is valid for 6 months. It isn’t necessary to specify where and when you are travelling, and if you intend to travel frequently you can obtain several at the same time.
A discount is also available for inter-island travel; this is between 20% and 25% depending on the ferry company.
European Community citizens can apply to the ‘Extranjeria’ in c/La Marina in Santa Cruz for an identity number. You will be issued with a yellow form which can be taken to the police station at Avda. Perez Armas near La Granja. The police will, after about two weeks issue you with a certificate stating an N.I.E. ( Numero de Identificacion de Extranjero). This number will come in very useful at times, and it’s advisable to carry a photocopy of the certificate with you.
