If you’re into walking or exploring you can get military maps of the whole island with a scale of 1:25,000. These are very detailed, and show contour lines and small roads and paths. These can be obtained from the Dept. of Cartography in the Military Building at the bottom of Rambla Pulido, opposite Plaza Weyler in Santa Cruz. They only cost about €1.80 They actually stock maps of the whole of the Canaries and indeed, the whole of Spain.
Subsidised by the Cabildo, you can take a four day course for as little as €54.00 to learn sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing. kite-surfing, or kayaking. Diving costs a little more. Phone 922 59 75 25 or 922 59 72 58

Peninsula
Providing you stay for at least one weekend and not more than 14 days, Iberia are offering return flights to Madrid for €120. which reduces to €80.00. for residents. Flights must be booked at least two days prior to date of travel. See note about residency under Bureaucracy.
Fares to other cities in the peninsula are slightly higher. The services to Madrid and Barcelona are daily, whereas Alicante for example is twice a week.
U.K.
Single tickets cost an average of about €75 to various U.K. destinations. The return flight alone can cost anywhere between €100 and €140, so it may be worth considering just buying the single here, and the return in the U.K.
Germany
Condor and UTA charters to Frankfurt and other destinations are around €85 one way and €160 return.(hin und zuruck)
France
It may be worthwhile checking out some of the travel agents in the South of the island, as there doesn’t seem to be much available in the way of charters in Santa Cruz.
Bar Micaela, La Laguna
Corner c/Anchieta and c/ Juan de Vera.
Strictly a “no frills” place, but I you’re looking for somewhere to have lunch in the town centre, you need look no further. You can have chicken soup, meatballs in tomato sauce, carne con papas (meat ‘n’ spuds), beefsteak, arroz amarillo or a la cubana- there’s also fish fillet , chocos (cuttlefish), and chicken breast which comes natural or in bread crumbs. Average cost for a full meal with drinks is around €7. So, lots of variety and the price is right. Open Mon-Fri for breakfasts and lunches only.
If you are visiting Santa Cruz de Tenerife for the sales, or simply for a walk around, call in at:

Apart from being very reasonable, price-wise, the service is excellent – perhaps that’s why we Forum bods always hold our planning meetings there!

Tenerife
Rincón Gomero – see first edition.
Casa Tomás: Portezuelo, near Los Rodeos.
Pork ribs with corn and potatoes is definitely the speciality here. Cheap. The wine isn’t fantastic, but………………
Gomera
Casa Conchita: Arure.
Try the ‘potaje de berros’ watercress soup, the fresh tuna, the ‘carne fiesta’ marinated, fried meat (pork). The prices are cheap and the food is award-winning, local fare.
Restaurante Charco del Conde: Valle Gran Rey.
Overlooking the sea. The fresh fish, paella and croquettes are the things to try here. Prices around 18 euros per head.
La Palma
Bodegón Tamanca
Various grills. Mid price range.
El Hierro
La Higuera de la Abuela: Echedo.
Kid is the thing to try here. Not cheap, but pleasant surroundings, and ‘sophisticated’.
El Refugio: La Restinga.
Fresh fish, mid price range.
More from Yaya in the next edition.
