(en

Hierbita
Tucked
away just near the Teatro Guimera, in Santa Cruz on calle Clavel,
is La Hierbita.
The building itself, once a
local whorehouse, goes back about two hundred years, and is full of
atmosphere, being very bright and airy.
This place gets very busy at lunch times, but it’s worth having a
drink at the bar, as you don’t usually have to wait very long for a
table. Apart from weekends its solely a lunchtime venue.
They specialise in Canarian cooking, and the Menu del Dia is 1350
ptas. Opening
times- Mon-Sat, 1200-1600,
Fri-Sat 2100-2400. Tel. 922 24 46 17 They have
a web page- www.guiatenerife.com/lahierbita. A
Horario:
lunes a sábado 12h00-16h00, viernes y sábado 21h00-24h00. Tel. 922

On the
corner of the Rambla General Franco and Calle Doctor Guigou, opposite the
Hotel Mencey in Santa Cruz, this slightly up-market ‘tasca’ has been
one of my happiest discoveries of the year. The menu is read out to you by
the ever cheery Alexis, and the eight or ten dishes on offer are mostly
seafood and fish. The ‘calamares a la andaluza’, the tomato and
avocado salad and the ‘pulpo a la gallega’ are a must, though you won’t
be disappointed whatever you choose.
One word of warning, however; as there doesn’t seem to be a
written menu, prices remain a mystery until after coffee, and I wouldn’t
wait until the end of the month to visit. Situada
The
Patio Canario is situated right in the centre of La Laguna, quite near the
cathedral. Its
typical Canary décor, along with its wide variety of local dishes and
tapas, - a very decent local plonk – make this wine/tapa bar the perfect
place for a night out with friends, On
Saturday nights, many of the regulars turn up with guitars, ‘timples’
and other typical musical instruments, and all those present are
encouraged to join in with what is generally a very enjoyable, sing-along
evening, which the Patio has long been famous for. Open from
8.30p.m. ‘til late. Other

If you’re
into walking or exploring you can get military maps of the whole island
with a scale of 1:25,000.
These are very detailed, and show contour lines and small roads and paths.
These can be obtained from the Dept. of Cartography in the Military
Building at the bottom of
Rambla Pulido, opposite Plaza Weyler in Santa Cruz. They only cost
about 300 ptas. They actually stock maps of the whole of the Canaries and
indeed, the whole of Spain. Flights

Peninsula
Return
flights to the peninsula for July
Providing
you stay for at least one weekend and not more than 14 days, Iberia are
offering return flights to Madrid for 34,500 ptas., which reduces to
23,600 ptas. for residents. See note about residency under Bureaucracy. Fares to
other cities in the peninsula are slightly higher. The services to Madrid
and Barcelona are daily, whereas Alicante for example is twice a week. U.K. Single tickets cost an
average of about 17,000 ptas. to various U.K. destinations. The return
flight alone can cost anywhere between 25,000 ptas. and 35,000 ptas, so it
may be worth considering just buying the single here, and the return in
the U.K. Germany Condor
and UTA charters to Frankfurt and other destinations are around 22,000
ptas one way and 40,000 return.(hin und zuruck) France It may be worthwhile
checking out some of the travel agents in the South of the island, as
there doesn’t seem to be much available in the way of charters in Santa
Cruz. Residency
and travel discounts
When
travelling from the Canaries to the peninsula, residents of the Canaries
are entitled to a 33% discount. All you need to do to qualify is to ‘empadronarte’
in the area where you live. You will need to go to your local “ayuntamiento”
(town hall) with proof of your address, such as water or electricity bills.
If you’re sharing a house, one of your roommates needs only to give you
a letter of authority together with the bills in his name.
You will then be given a document
-its called “hoja de inscripcion” (there is a nominal charge)
Whenever you want to travel you simply go along to your
ayuntamiento, and on paying a fee of about 360 ptas, you will receive a
travel document- “certificado
de viaje” which is valid for 6 months. It isn’t necessary to specify
where and when you are travelling, and if you intend to travel frequently
you can obtain several at the same time.
A discount is also available for inter-island travel;
this is between 20% and 25%
depending on the ferry company. Identity
Number
European Community citizens
can apply to the ‘Extranjeria’ in c/La Marina in Santa Cruz for an
identity number. You will be
issued with a yellow form which can be taken to the police station
at Avda Benito Perez Armas near La Granja Park. The police will, after
about two weeks, issue you with a certificate stating an N.I.E. ( Numero
de Identificacion de Extranjero). This number will come in very useful at
times, and it’s advisable to carry a photocopy of the certificate with
you.
