The new academic year has not long started, bringing with it its usual dose of stress, students, time-tabling.............and books!  Every year we are faced with the same problem, the difficult task of finding the most suitable textbook for our needs and aims.

To prepare this section, I spent many hours reading through information, asking for and compiling comments from teachers and specialists in the field, and the result is the following list of texts most highly assessed for the year 2001-2002.

Teaching Listening Comprehension      Penny Ur      1984 Cambridge

In this book, Penny Ur manages to bridge the gap between producing an analysis of the process of listening and simply a series of exercises.

It  is a practical book which deals with a) What sort of listening activities go on in real life.  b)What  particular difficulties are likely to be encountered by the learner when coping with them  and  c) How we as teachers can best help the student to master these difficulties. Suggestions abound, both for listening for comprehension and for perception, and activities include guessing games, gapfills, detecting mistakes, noting specific information, and problem solving,  using songs, pictures and maps.
